The stunning mountain resort community of Whistler is nestled in the beautiful Coast Mountains of British Columbia in Canada. Your home base in Whistler will be a bustling village that is breathtakingly close to nature. Student life at the VSO Institute is refreshing, rejuvenating, stimulating, and energizing. There is nothing like making music in a natural setting as gorgeous as Whistler. Every one of our students will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the wonder of the VSO and the wonder of Whistler.

Lodging + Meals

The spacious Tantalus Lodge will be your home in Whistler for the week! Shared with three other students, your apartment-style suite will be a short and beautiful walk to all VSOIW activities as well as the world class restaurants, shopping, and recreation the Whistler Village has to offer. The Tantalus Lodge is perfectly suited to your needs. Each suite is fully equipped with a kitchen if you’d prefer to prepare your meals, and you are warmly welcomed to practice, relax, or socialize in your suites. The Tantalus also features complimentary wifi, a swimming pool, hot tubs and sauna, tennis and beach volleyball courts, picnic areas, and laundry facilities.

Options abound for a great meal in Whistler! There are dozens of excellent restaurants in all price ranges and types of cuisine within close walking distance of all VSO Institute facilities. If you’d rather “eat-in,” every room at the Tantalus has a fully equipped kitchen and grocery stores are easily accessible in the village. Students can choose an optional meal plan, providing breakfast foods for your rooms and a delicious catered lunch each day to help simplify your busy day of VSOIW activities.


At the beginning of the VSO Institute, we are pleased to host group evening of food and fun in order for you to get acquainted with the superb members of the VSOIW orchestra. Your future colleagues are looking forward to meeting you!

During the VSO Institute, students will have spare time to discover the wonders of Whistler! Summers in Whistler have become synonymous with active living and adventure, and we are proud to offer you the opportunity to live this to the fullest! Group recreation activities in Whistler can be booked on a special webpage designed just for the VSOIW. There are specific windows of time where you may opt into group activities such as whitewater rafting, bike rentals, horseback trail riding, or zip-lining that will not interfere with your VSOIW programming.

There is a ton to do in Whistler even if you do not choose to participate in the formal group activities. There are endless opportunities for hiking, walking, biking, shopping, or just sitting around with a coffee and relaxing in the fresh mountain air!

12:30-1:30 lunch
1:30-2:30 Coaching or instrument-specific repertoire class
2:30-4:30 Free time for individual practice or for exploring Whistler
4:30-5:30 dinner
5:30-7:00 Orchestra sectional rehearsal or masterclass or chamber rehearsal
7:30-9:30 Chamber music recital
